A good rule of thumb is to allow a 1-foot clearance on each side of the porch swing. Sometimes getting a full 12 inches may not be possible due to space limitations. An experienced swing installer can assess the conditions and determine feasibility. Installing a swing with clearance less than 12 inches on each side is not ideal, but it is possible.
